THE BURNING WHITE: Orbit Loot Giveaway, Amazon Book of the Month

Happy October, fellow Chromeriacs!

It’s officially Halloween season, and we’re officially THREE WEEKS away from THE BURNING WHITE’s Book Birthday!

The cover image to The Burning White by Brent Weeks

We have so much awesome stuff to share with you this month, and I’m so excited I can barely typegebbarghifayatholshawarmasceneofthartsegeinsen!

Ahem.

The first announcement on this first day of a month packed full of pumpkins, pre-orders, prestidigitation, paryl, parties, protuberances, and bawling into your popcorn is that Amazon has selected THE BURNING WHITE as one of the Best SFF Books of the Month. Gavin and Co are in good company on this list. Check it out, and make sure you pre-order your copy of the book, if you haven’t already. (That’s an affiliate link, FTR.)

Secondly, Orbit is hosting a Lightbringer Loot Giveaway.

Enter for a chance to win an exclusive hardcover boxed set of the complete Lightbringer series, plus a letter from the Man himself! All you have to do is share your email address with Orbit, then sit back and wait for a month.*

Happy Tuesday!

Dread Pirate CAPSLOCK

*Deadline to enter is Oct 31. We encourage you to wait patiently to hear who wins, because sitting on the edge of your seat with all your fingers and toes crossed sounds stressful. Also,  your butt would go numb eventually. Also, that can’t be good for your back. Also, you can’t eat Halloween candy with crossed fingers.

Life, The Universe, and Brent Turning 42

Hi friends!

CAPSLOCK here to let y’all in on a fun project I’ve got going to celebrate Jefe turning 42 in March. Since it’s his Answer Birthday, I thought it appropriate to celebrate by giving away stuff!

Your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to create a piece of hybrid art that celebrates NIGHT ANGEL or LIGHTBRINGER and THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE.  Take your favorite bit from one of Brent’s stories (a character, or concept, or object) and add it to the HHGG Universe. Or vice versa.

Think whale and sea demon fighting over a pot of petunias. Andross playing Nine Kings against Marvin. Zaphod holding a ka’kari. Durzo stealing the Heart of Gold. Karris and Ford playing Krikket against Kylar and Arthur. Or keep it simple and come up with a quote that merges a line from each author.

Use whatever medium you love most: cross stitch, cookies, paintings, photography, cosplay, ceramics, woodworking, digital art, words… Heck, you wanna send us a [short] bit of hybrid fanfic? Have you often wondered how a conversation between Dorian and Zaphod would go? Make it happen!

The prize for FOUR lucky winners (other than knowing you’ve made your favorite author’s birthday super-duper-extra amazing) will be either a signed copy of one of Brent’s books, a t-shirt, and/or a bookmark made by none other than Instagram’s @kylarguile.

Send photos of your masterpiece to ME [admin@brentweeks.com] by March 31, 11:42pm PST. We’ll announce the winners on April 4, 2019.

And, as usual, you have to be at least 18 years old to win.

I’m so excited to see what y’all come up with!

P.S. If you are thoroughly confused by this, and you have no idea what the heck The Hitchhiker’s Guide is, it’s totally okay. Brent has still only read the first book in the series–and that was recently!–so you’re not alone. And if you’re a hoopy frood who had the words “DON’T PANIC” in friendly green wooden letters above their crib, NO SHAMING. We are all friends here.

BattleWorn Books 2018 Winners

The time has come!

We are about 15 HOURS away from the official release (in the US; UK fans have ~32 hours… And I suppose if you live in a different time zone in the US, 12-14 hours. You get the idea) of the Astonishing, Spectacular, Resplendent, Death-Defying, Super Special, Blacker-Than-Black, 10th Anniversary Hardcover Night Angel Omnibus. *cue [REDACTED] music* (that we didn’t license)

The entries have been examined, contemplated, and discussed. You all have sent your beleaguered books into battle, and not all of them have returned from the fray. They have been well-loved and well read. They have been covered in blood, sweat, and tears (literally, as you’ll see).

Fans the world over have been anxiously anticipating this moment.

Drum roll, please!

The five runners-up are below, in no particular order–

Kevin Jones, who posted on Twitter:

“My copies of the Night Angel Trilogy were bought used at my local bookstore and through many rereads and their eventual passing down to my oldest daughter they’ve been through a lot.

Tried to depict Kylar with some of the ka’kari.”

Jared Stonecypher, who emailed us:

“I wanted to introduce some friends to the Lightbringer Series and Night Angel Trilogy. My Night Angel omnibus made it home safely, but my Black Prism hardback was far from unscathed when it came home. Their dog is a huge bookworm I guess!”

Blayne McGuire, who posted on Facebook:

Here is my #BattleWornBooks story for the last book in the Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks. This book has survived at least 7 moves, 1 rainstorm in a car with open windows when I was carrying it around while reading it, being loaned out once, and generally being abused during the 5+ times I’ve personally read it while owning it. The 2nd novel gets an honorable mention since it is MIA after being loaned out to an old coworker. So now I just have the 1st and 3rd of the series.

Aereal McQu, who posted on Facebook:

When your dog gets a hold of book 2 and 3, you only buy a new Shadow’s Edge because you’ve memorized the destroyed bits of Beyond the Shadows.

Daryl Duda, who emailed us:

In 2015, 2 friends and myself quit our jobs to set out into the Canadian wilderness to do some survival camping with nothing but around 70 lbs of “things we would take into the apocalypse”.  The only reading material we had were the Night Angel series, and we continually speed read the hell out of them nightly in our hammocks; almost in a competition to finish whichever book you had first so you could berate the guy who had the following novel to hurry the hell up.  There were never more than 2 days between finishes as we were hungry for our entertainment. Not sure to this day what happened to book 1 and I contrasted the old with the new.

P.S.  The paperbacks also make a pretty decent pillow if you’re wrapped up tight in a hammock…

And now, the Grand Prize Winner of the 2018 BattleWorn Books Contest:

Kellie Speedy, whose book was in a car crash!

A few years ago, I let a good friend borrow a series of books that I love. Not the Wheel of Time, but instead The Night Angel by Brent Weeks. The weekend after I lent the books, he and his girlfriend were in a horrific accident that thankfully both survived. But my books did not. This is my entry to #BattleWornBooks.

(Kellie also mentioned that her friends are both doing spectacularly well, and are expecting their second child in a few months. I have some name ideas, if you’re interested…)

Thank you all for your fantastic, creative entries this year. I couldn’t ask for a better group of fans!

BattleWorn Books Contest Is Officially Closed

Hi everybody,

Just here to let you all know that the 2018 BATTLEWORN BOOKS Competition is officially CLOSED. We will be collecting all of the entries around social media and in our email, Brent is going to take a look at them, and we will post the list of winners by next Monday, November 12, 7 AM PST.

Thank you for all of your excellent submissions!

From the contest in 2017.

UPDATE: NIGHT ANGEL #BattleWornBooks

To celebrate the launch of the NIGHT ANGEL 10TH Anniversary Omnibus, we’re giving fans a chance to win some pretty awesome Night Angel swag. The contest is open to fans in the U.S. and abroad. One grand prize winner will receive a stellar collection of NIGHT ANGEL books, and five others will receive an EXCLUSIVE Night Angel t-shirt!

Via Twitter or Facebook, post a photo of your favorite, most-loved, battle-worn Night Angel book (or set of books) using the hashtag #BattleWornBooks and a line or two about how the book got that way. We’d love to see some creative scenery or settings (though no digital enhancement, please).

By the way, if you’re that one person who brought in that super bloody book that I signed? You should totally submit that. Also, I’m never signing an actually bloody book again. I was young and foolish then.

Oh, and don’t beat up your book just to win this contest…. I mean, unless you’re going to go out and buy new copies afterward. Then you should DEFINITELY beat up your book just to win this contest.

More details below.

Loot:

ONE (1) Person will receive: a NIGHT ANGEL 10TH Anniversary Omnibus, a copy of THE WAY OF SHADOWS graphic novel, and a foreign-language edition of your choice (we’ll have a list of editions for you to choose from).

FIVE (5) People will win a copy of the NIGHT ANGEL Omnibus plus an exclusive, black-on-black Night Angel t-shirt.

Rules:

1. Entries may be submitted starting TODAY (Friday, August 17) until FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2 at 9am Pacific Daylight Time.

2. Entry must include:

a) a picture of your favorite NIGHT ANGEL book

b) a one or two sentence description, telling everyone how your poor book got to this state

c) #BattleWornBooks

3. International entries are allowed and encouraged!

4. Some photo editing is fine:  think enhancement, not special effects.

5. You can only win once–but three books, so it’s like winning three times. Three times is enough.

6. If you email rather than post to Twitter or Facebook, the subject line of the email should read: #battlewornbooks.  If you choose to use email, address the email to admin@brentweeks.com. (as in previous years, I will be selecting the winners).

7. Other: I will judge the photos and will select the six winners. You must be 18 or older to win (younger participants are welcome, but by law we can’t give you a prize). No purchase is necessary. Odds of winning are based on the number of entries, but definitely higher if you submit. We will notify winners via Twitter, Facebook, or email, depending on how you submitted the photo. You must respond within 7 days, or another winner will be chosen. That would be sad for you. They’d be happy. So maybe the net happiness would be neither increased nor decreased. We could try it out if you win.

8. Winners will be announced on Monday, November 12, 2018.

Limited Bookplate Giveaway #2: UK and Ireland

UPDATE: We’ve reached our 50-fan limit, and the giveaway is now closed!

United Kingdom and Ireland, you didn’t think I forgot about you, did you?

I’d originally wanted to do a giveaway for 100 fans from the UK/Ireland/Australia/New Zealand… and then I realized how unfair that might be, considering that 8am in Sydney is 10pm in London. So we split this into two giveaways!

UK and Ireland fans, I’m sorry I couldn’t make it there to tour this year. For the first 50 people to sign up from those countries, I’ll be mailing you a signed Lightbringer bookplate on November 4, 2016. Once the first 50 have signed up, that’s it. So don’t delay!

Here’s the bookplate:

Limited Bookplate Giveaway: AUS/NZ Readers!

UPDATE: The giveaway is now closed! Thank you for the enthusiastic response! If you were in the first 50 to sign up, look for your bookplate in a few weeks!

Because I’m not able to make it to Australia or New Zealand this book tour — I’m hosting a bookplate giveaway! For the first 50 people from those countries who fill out the below form, I will sign and mail you a free bookplate to place in the inside front cover of The Blood Mirror. Bookplates will be shipping November 4, 2016.

Here’s an example:
