My Book… for a Buck

Rejoice, all e-book readers. If you read books through the Amazon Kindle, Mobipocket or Sony, during the month of January, you can get The Way of Shadows for $1.

That’s right, for the same price you spent in a moment of weakness on that last shamefully lip-synched song by an over-produced Disney boyband from iTunes, you can get the first book of the Night Angel Trilogy.

Have a fear of commitment? Hey, it’s only a dollar! Poor because you spent $359 to read $8 books? Hey, it’s only a dollar!

Technophiles, this is what you’ve been waiting for. Here’s your line: “Look how cheap the books are on this, honey. In the long run, we’ll save money.”

A fancy new Kindle (sold separately),  none of the guilt that comes from supporting a boyband–and for a limited time, this special offer even comes with a halfway decent book! And hey, it’s only a dollar! If it were any cooler, we’d have to hire that guy from the Sham-Wow! commercials.

And even if you want to pass on my book, Orbit will be running the same promotion with different authors every month. Check it out HERE.

(Wow, being a breathless shill is tiring. I think I’ll go back to being a nerdy novelist, and I promise my next post will contain no more than one exclamation point.)

UPDATE: Due to sad “territoriality issues,” Mobipocket has bailed from this cool promo. Good news–well, for me–is that The Way of Shadows has been #1 in the Sony e-store for the past week. Good news for all Sony readers is that Sony has finally got book 3 (Beyond the Shadows) into its store. (A mere two months and dozens of emails later!) Sorry for the extra snark this morning–I haven’t had my coffee yet.

    “Beware of imitators.”

I can only imagine the Sham-Wow! guy advertising your book.

“‘The Way of Shadows’ was written by a guy from Oregon! And you know how people from Oregon write good stuff! You’ll be more absorbed in this book than you would be in normal books, it holds twenty times its weight in entertainment! You’ll say WOW every time you read it!”

  2. Only a buck???? No, not only a buck because then I’d have to purchase a dad-gum iPod phone thing-a-ma-bob just to look cool while reading on an electronic devise I have no idea how to work.

I just purchased all three books for myself for Christmas….you’re welcome.

Brent, I put that info up on the forum last night. You keep busy writing and let your fans do the shameless shilling for you!

I know this has nothing to do with the post but i have to ask and don’t know where else to go. WHERE CAN I BUY A RETRIBUTION REPLICA!?!?! I want one very much. Pwease.

I just ordered your three books in the set that came through the Science Fiction Book Club… reading your excerpt of book 1 on your site made me click “add to cart” faster than…well, faster than I’ve done much of anything lately. Really looking forward to reading it.

That’s good to hear. Still, I don’t see me using e-books as long as there isn’t a good, affordable reader available. That’s not the case right now.

I just ordered all three of your books and I will enjoy them the old-fashioned way – the way books were meant to be read.

  7. Geoffrey Kidd says:

I’m seriously not impressed with the offer. The ebooks offered are available only from Amazon(DRM-locked to Kindle), MobiPocket(DRM-locked, and mobi on PDA is worthless as a reader), and Sony(DRM-locked to their proprietary reader.)

Would YOU buy a book that required you to say mother-may-I every time you tried to read it, and couldn’t be read anywhere except, say, in the privacy of your own study?

Feh! I say, and toddle off to Baen where I can get zero-DRM books at a good price and am not forced to use a greedy vendor’s proprietary format.

  8. brent says:

    Geoffrey,
Orbit orginally had this offer available through quite a number of ebook outlets, but got yanked by “territorial issues” at the last second back to only the above three. So lawyers rule us all.
If you want a book available by a Baen author, more power to them.
What we are able to do may be imperfect, but it doesn’t seem like such a moral outrage (to me at least) to accept a few restrictions in order to get a book for 1/8th its normal price. Just sayin’…

I downloaded this and found a new Author I like. Now I’ll be forced to buy the rest. Sneaky business tactics : )

So when will book 3 be published on Sony’s eBook Store? The $1 book has me hooked and I’m looking to round out the collection? Great story arc…I’m hooked.

  11. Jesslyn says:

Okay, I’m hooked. I am glad I revisited for the $1, and will have no problems paying full price for the other books in the series.

I am on Chapter 5 and if the rest of the book is as good as up to now, I will post a review on my site (and Amazon). Great story so far.

I have to tell you, tracking down a eBook I can use has been hell. Mobipocket has apparently broken something somewhere and been delisted from OneDollarOrbit.com. Anyway, it appears that Fictionwise has the same offer so I’m off to order it there. I really wish Amazon would let people with mobi-compatible devices to register PIDs with them so we could buy Kindle books as well. I mean, I’d rather have access to cheaper mobi ebooks.

As for the guy complaining about DRM. I’m there with you, but at least most retailers are reasonable (register up to 4 devices, and you can change them later) and eInk displays are bloody amazing. Better than paper IMO. You just need the right tech.

  13. Garett says:

Correction. Fictionwise only has eReader and Microsoft Lit, which are useless formats to me. I’ll have to hope my complaint to Mobipocket gets them to fix whatever it is that up.

  14. Reg says:

    Hey!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for putting up book three on Sony… I was getting
desperate out there!!! So really, thanks for the promo…great new author
    Great books…
Looking forward to more “dollar” books!

  15. Arial Burnz says:

I have the Sony eReader and saw the promo in their eBook store, so I bought it. Looking forward to reading it based on the positive comments about the book. As an author, I’m intrigued with the whole eBook format. I LOVE to read and having all my books in a small “carrying case” is amazing!! I even have “War and Peace” in my eReader! Can you imagine that! (Don’t know if I’ll ever readi it, but it makes for a nice conversation piece!)

    Good luck on your writing!!!

    Wow.

I loved the first book. Once I finally had tracked down a copy, I couldn’t put the book down.

I didn’t realized most people didn’t read acknowledgements. Learn something new every day (mind, I think you thanked just about everyone except the telephone company 😉 ).

I look forward to reading the other two books.

    Thank you.
