“The Perfect Fantasy Debut”?

Books Monthly thinks so, and has selected BOTH The Way of Shadows and Shadow’s Edge as its Science Fiction or Fantasy Books of the Month. They call it, “A genuine page turner, and truly impossible to put down.” They say other ridiculously nice things, too, so heck, go there and CHECK IT OUT.

Books Monthly also has a ridiculously easy quiz for UK residents to win all three books, but the deadline is November 28th. (Sorry for the short notice, my fault, I’ve been meaning to post this all month!)

Frankly, Brent, I’m inclined to agree with them. This is the first new fiction I’ve bought in a few years. That says a lot in my book. 🙂

  2. Zohar says:

Hi Brent, your brazzilian fan here. Just want to say that the books arrived here in Brazil today and I am already in the 100 page of Way of Shadow, loving every word!

The praise of Books monthly isnt overrated. You deserve it! Congratulations!

I am not sure if I should hate you or love you! I had never read a book faster than I did book one. I finished all 661 pages in 3 days (freaking work). And yes, I am quirky enough to have read the part were you thought I wouldn’t. I HAD never read a book faster. I finished book 2 in one day. It was a really long day, but I made it. Skipping work and fighting through starvation I finished the third book. I loved them. Now comes the hate part. I WANT MORE!!! Hurry up or the misery I am going through may conjure a ferali, vir or not!

And so, yes. I think it is a Perfect Fantasy Debut. See, I even stayed on topic.

  4. brent says:

John, hey, I appreciate that. Guess I need to thank Calvin Chu who put together the great cover art for tempting you into picking it up. 🙂
Zohar, Thanks. I know you went out on a limb and bought the whole trilogy before you knew much about it, so I’m really happy you’re enjoying it!
Rick, sounds like you read the way I read. Dude, I’ve got some serious advice for you… hold the book in your off hand and feed yourself with the other. Ta da, no starvation! 😉

I too am amazed and awed by this first book, “The Way of the Shadows”. I will have to wait to get paid for the second. I like the build up and inter play of the individuals we are introduced to along this story line. I met people that I wish were real to call friend and also some who reminded me of me. I am a fencer and martial artist as well as a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism. This first book played to all three interests.
Congratulations on the success, the offer for a new trilogy and yes I read the acknowledgments.

  6. Zohar says:

Hey Brent, about buying your three books in a roll, call it compulsive behavior if you like. Serious, as a fantasy reader my main frustration (and off most readers fot that matter) comes from the 1 year or more book schedule most authors do, and because of that I made a promise of only buying stories already ended. Seeing your books released in a roll and the good reviews I made up my mind (and I like assassin stories too). It was a risk bet but I am winning (liking the books), or shoud I say WE are winning heheh.

Page 210 of Way of Shadows and counting. I am reading slowly to savor the book (and not getting mad so soon because it ended).

  7. Ajahli says:

I am almost done with Beyond the Shadows. I agree with them, I rarely ever take a chance on a book I’m unfamiliar with and I think that the Night Angel Trilogy is an awesome debut, especially in the fantasy genre where everything has started to become a bit stale and predictable (at least for me). Congrats! You should be proud! 🙂

  8. Rick Stewart says:

Brent, what in the heck are you doing chatting on the website? You should be somewhere in Bulgaria, frantically whipping your slave into a blur of prose!

  9. Chad Walker says:

    Mr.Weeks,
I am a discerning fantasy fan and I am loving your first book, Way of Shadows. I purchased the Kindle version of it. My only problem with the Kindle is that I can barley see the map (on all books, not just yours). Is there a printable version of the map somewhere that I can put in the cover of my Kindle? Thanks.

  10. Nonny says:

I’m a bit over halfway through Shadow’s Edge and loving it. I’m not surprised at all at the Books Monthly review. 😉

It’s been quite awhile since I’ve read a fantasy series that has caught me this much. I love dark fantasy and these days, finding it in a non-contemporary setting is difficult.

  11. brent says:

Rick, funny thing is, I actually have gotten some emails from a Bulgarian guy… no, for real. And he might not appreciate your whips. 😉
Chad, I’m going to check and see if we can get the maps put up in the Extras section of this website.
Everyone, thank you for your kind comments… You may have noticed that the comments section of future posts is closed. We did that because it was so easy for comments to get lost, and I really do want to make sure I can respond to everyone. It’s also a great place to have discussions with other fans… or critics. 🙂 So please sign up at brentweeks.ning.com

absoultely love what i’ve read so far btw.

  13. Laura says:

I just started the first book in your series and I am completely hooked! It’s funny but my husband bought your book for himself but I stole it from him! Now I am talking his ear off about it!

  14. John Thomas says:

Actually, Brent, I somehow found myself at Orbit’s website (can’t remember how) and read the excerpt there, and THAT hooked me.

I like the cover, but it was that sample that snagged me.

I do have to say, though, that my wife is glad I’m through all three so that I can begin socializing with her and the kids again. 🙂

  21. Jack says:

Seriously…loving the books, confused by where everyone is going (why is everyone always going north, regardless of where they are going or where they are trying to get???)

Bought a Kindle, found the trilogy, telling my friends. BUT, really need a map. Doesn’t even need to be on the Kindle (hence why I am on the net) but really…it would help a ton!

Anyway, keep up the good work Brent (please).

    Jack

  22. brent says:

    Jack,
If you click on the Open Book link on the left side of the screen (under the poll), a few pages in is the map of Midcyru. Hope it helps a bit.

  23. J.McL says:

Excellent triology (even though i havent finished the 3rd book)

Only had one little problem with the books…

Is it just me or is anyone else missing pages 441-489 in “Beyond the Shadows”?

Could you please upload chapter 64-70 to the ebook thing ?

    1. brent says:

We have heard similar problems from several folks in the UK and are working on a solution. Would you mind looking at the copyright page and emailing me with which printing you purchased? Thank you! Others have had success with returning their book to the store where they purchased it.

      1. Peter says:

Just realized the copy of Beyond the Shadows I’ve got from my local library has the same problem as J. Carm below (missing pages 393-440 and 441-488 appear twice). It’s a library copy so I’m not out of pocket – just letting you know so you can keep track of the situation.

  24. J.McL says:

    Almost forgot:

I have 2 sets of pages 489-536 instead of pages 441-488

  25. J.Carm says:

Love the books so far. Just got halfway into the last one. Ran into a small problem. I’m missing pages 392 – 441 and I have two sets of pages 441-488.

I live in Sweden but purchased the books in the UK so I’m afraid returning it to the store is not an option. Any other alternatives?

    1. brent says:

For most people, the best thing to do if there’s a printing problem is to take it back to the store. But if you CAN’T, then email Orbit directly. They will send you a new copy. And sorry for that! Mistakes happen, I guess… sorry it happened on your copy.

  26. Max7238 says:

NEED a map of Midcyru… Seriously, there isn’t one ANYWHERE. (Except in the book…)
