Lightbringer #3 Update (Early 2013)

“So when’s the next book out, Weeks?”

When I was on my book tour a few months ago, I expressed my hope that the next book in The Lightbringer Series might, might be out in a year. (I was careful not to promise: I’ve learned from others’ mistakes!) So now, of course, with fans having patiently waited for five whole months (!) I’m getting more emails asking, “Hey, when can I further fund your lavish lavish lifestyle, O Master Weeks?”* (*actual quotes may bear no relation to reality)

Neil Gaiman might tell you that you haven’t any right to ask. I gave you a good story, o book buyer, so shut up.** (**Not an accurate paraphrase) But as I made the mistake of publicly disagreeing with an SFF icon, it seems to me I should put up or shut up. So here’s the word in brief: No New Lightbringer Book from Weeks in 2013.

For those of you who want to know a bit of the why, continue reading.

You epic fantasy fans may be familiar with Tolkien’s quote that “the story grew in the telling.” So it’s been with The Lightbringer Series. I’d planned for book 3 to be a bit shorter. (By which I mean 600+ pages, about the length of The Way of Shadows and Shadow’s Edge–not short books.) I’m a fairly consistent daily producer of pages, and if I’d made this book as long as I’d planned it to be, it would indeed have been published late this year. But… it’s longer. It’s longer than The Way of Shadows. It’s longer than Shadow’s Edge. It’s now longer than Beyond the Shadows. It will likely be longer than The Black Prism.

The work? It’s going well. I’m really pleased with the progress of this one. Where I was proud of The Blinding Knife because the story flew–high tension to high tension to surprise, with the world expanding and characters deepening all over the place–in this next book I’ve chosen to deepen the resonance while keeping a breakneck pace and not adding any fluff. (Title still to be determined. I’ve been calling it The Blood Mirror just to call it something, but that works better as a title for book 4, and my editor hasn’t liked any alternative titles I’ve proposed yet. Nor, to be honest, have I.)

It’s been my philosophy to write the best books I can, as fast as I can. To be honest, where I am in my career, I could make the most money by cranking out books faster.

But I’m making a living writing–that is my wildest dream, and you fans have given that to me. I have no interest in “cranking out books” to put as much of your money in my pocket as possible. I believe I owe my fans and myself the best stories I have it in me to tell. In this case, that means some more waiting for all of us. I’ve had long talks with my agent and editor about this, and they are both successful enough and wise enough that they’ve told me to get it right, to have fun with it, and to make it the best book it can be.

The writing is going brilliantly. I haven’t been stuck once. (Well, not for more than a day or so.) Yesterday, I finished a scene I think will stick with you, maybe forever. There are loose ends to be tied. There are hints to add about the series resolution. There’s a finale to write. I’m productive, having fun, and writing as well or better than I’ve ever written in my life.

I understand if that isn’t happening fast enough for you. I simply hope that when I give you the final product, it will more than make up for the wait.

You can expect another longish update on or before September 2013.

Crap. The tears are welling up. These tears are for you, Weeks. These tears, are tears of joy.

  2. Pat Hayes says:

I would, by far, rather you write at the pace that works for you that gets you to where you want to be with the series than you for you to “crank it out” to satisfy people who are more at home with the idea of “fast food” writing than “slow and low home cooking” writing.

  3. Kay says:

I actually haven’t been able to read The Blinding Knife yet, all my money has gone to university tuition and food, but everything you’ve written I’ve loved so much, you’re up there with Gaiman to me, and I just love Gaiman to bits. I don’t mind waiting a little longer if it means it’ll be the same quality as the other great stuff you’ve already written.

  4. Ben says:

Just keep up the good work. Im sure we all want 6 books a year from you but understand and want every book to be the best it can be. Therefore we sit and wait and dream.

  5. Drew says:

Mr Weeks I would by far prefer you went at your pace as each and every book you have written has been in my eyes a masterpiece. So do not yield to the public pressure of “cranking books out” but I have to say the Blinding Knife was such a great book and thank you for visiting Waterstones in Edinburgh when you did was a pleasure to meet you sir. Keep up the excellent work

  6. Athena Cherise says:

Thank you for the update! I will keep (im)patiently waiting, but I’m okay with that. Sort of. I’d rather wait to get a great book than have you hurry and give me a so-so one.

  7. Rae Twelftree says:

Finished Book 2 at the weekend and instantly went on line to check when book 3 would be out. A whole year of waiting!!! but so glad you are not becoming a mass producer of books for the financial rewards, too many good authors have gone down this route and produce market driven tat which greatly lets down their readers. So I’m really looking forward to the next book and greatly appreciate you taking the time to write something great (an assumption there I know but on previous writing I should think guaranteed!).

  8. Kate says:

While I am sad that there will be no new book this year (dude, you left us on a freak’n cliffhanger, darn you!! Grrr….Why do you have to be sooooo goood? Gah!), I’m actually glad you are taking your time with it and wanting to tell the best story that you can. And to see that you haven’t gotten stuck for more than a day, wish I could have that luck! Thank you for the update, it is much appreciated. All I do know is that when the third book does come out and I finally have it in my hands, it will be well worth the wait. 🙂 Happy Writing, Weeks!

  9. Shan says:

To be honest I take it as a good sign to be made to wait longer as I’ve come to trust you in your story telling thus far so if you feel additional story is going to enhance the experience then it’s perfectly fine with me.

Plus there are so many brilliant books out there to read in the meantime, just in sci-fi fantasy alone I currently have Sam Sykes: Skybound Sea, Peter V. Brett: Daylight War and the Wheel of Time finale to make my way through still.

Glad to hear the book and just your overall feelings to your writing in general are going so well and I look forward to revisiting Kip, Gavin, Karris and Teia in 2014 ^_^

  10. Nic Pan says:

although it’s hard to wait, it is indeed worth it!

  11. M Dysput says:

The hardest part of reading this update, which by the way is very much appreciated since other Authors refuse to even speak of their writing progress, is knowing that it means a even longer wait to a possible return to the “Shadows” characters & world… I read the Night Angel Trilogy in about a week and I can only hope when I get to read the LightBringer Series, it captures my attention in a similar way, that it provides the snarky sarcasm found in your previous writing, and it fills me with the a similar Euphoric Trip to another reality if only for a short period of time…

Thank you for enabling of my addiction with your imagination and keeping us updated on your progress…

  12. Mark says:

Well, I guess I’ll just have to re read The Night Angel trilogy and The Lightbringer books when I start craving some good ole Week’s writing.

  13. MikePye says:

    Hi Brent,

In todays society you will never please everyone, you just have to make the decision that is best for you and your talent. In the end fans my grumble but they’ll respect you all the more for a stand up piece of work than a shoddy knockup. Yes I am pained there is a wait but it’ll be worth it.

On a random side note… have you considered a competition for you next book title? You could throw out a sentance or 2 and see what you get. Could be a winner!

  14. Garet says:

Heck, as much as I want more and more books, I would much prefer that you never feels rushed because readers want something faster than you can get it out to them. It will probably always be like that for authors that write long series, that’s just how it seems to work, people like something, so they want more. I love your books, I really really do, and because of the passion I have for your books, you can take as long as you needed to write something, because, at the end of the day, the wait will surely be worth it. Happy writing Mr. Weeks!

  15. Stan says:

Well I (same as Kay above) haven’t been able to enjoy the contents of The Blinding Knife yet, just the reasoning is slightly different. I am now deployed in Afghanistan and there are about two months before I return back home to Czech republic. And among the first things that I’ll do there is to buy “The Blinding Knife”, sit somewhere in the green forest or meadow and read it while listening to the peaceful sounds of nature.

  16. Allie says:

Having to wait over a year for a book that will be as good as the other two in the Lightbringer series really is not a problem! They say “good things come to those who wait” and the wait will be worth it.

  17. Brandon says:

I picked up a copy of The Way of Shadows at a cozy little book store in a town I used to live. Thinking, well, its got some guy that might be an assassin on the cover, or some kind of ninja maybe, I’ll give it a shot. Less than a week later, I was digging through the shelves of that same book store looking for any and all books that had your name on them. I was disappointed there was only this trilogy, but purchased both immediately. Even if there weren’t any more series or trilogy’s here with your name, I knew that talent like that wouldn’t have stopped with just one set of paper gold. Since then, i’ve re-read this trilogy 4-5 times and every time it just leaves me wanting more. I always end up thinking about what could happen next or what could not happen and it always makes me want more.

Then you started a wholly new and wonderful series, and I’ve been in love with it ever since. I’ve re-read Black Prism and Blinding Knife 2-3 times each in anticipation. That being said, I’m more than willing to wait a year if it means going and purchasing something as fine as your previous works, it will be well worth the wait.

In my personal opinion, you’re up there with the likes of R.A. Salvatore, Weis and Hickman, Rowling, Pullman, Tolkien, and a whole slew of other amazing authors that simply put are the best. Keep up the amazing work.

  18. Samantha says:

In this update you have managed to, at once, remind us all of how much we desperately want to find out what happens next, devastate us with the news that we will have to wait longer than we had originally thought and much longer than we had hoped, and tantalize us with descriptions like “a scene that will stick with you forever” which only make us even more desperate for the next book!
You, sir, are a master publicist as well as an excellent author. Bravo.

p.s. Due to the Lightbringer series, you’ve now made #3 on my favorite authors list, passing Jim Butcher and being surpassed only by Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.

  19. Jeremiah says:

I’m sure I’m not the only one to say this, but take all the time you need. Oh, we may want new books from you all the time, I know I wouldn’t complain if you released a new book as soon as I finished reading your last one, but we know that masterpieces take time and, Master Weeks, every one of your books is a masterpiece. You once said “you give me a few pages, and I’ll give you a helluva ride.” Take all the pages and all the time you need. We’ll be here when you are done.

  20. Ellen says:

As hard as it is to wait (you did leave us at not one but several cliff hangers), I would rather have it be great and up to the standards of the first two. And I wanted to reread the first two anyway. Thanks for not giving us the Neil Gaiman hard love response. I love him and I am looking forward to reading his new book in June. I thought your explanation was erudite, honest, and showed how much you do care about your readers. It should also satisfy even the most demanding fans.

  21. Nic says:

Thanks for the update! Take you time and do it right, we will wait if thats what it takes. These books are too awesome for you to rush if you don’t feel comfortable. I hope that when you finish you are truly proud (as you should be about the rest of your books thus far) and i’m sure that we will love it. You really make reading fun and entertaining, especially for those of us who were turned off by reading at school. Please never stop making new books.
PS: If you want to write more on the Night Angel that would be awesome 🙂

  22. Paul says:

You are one of my favorite authors, and I’m more than willing to wait.

Thanks for the update. Keep on doing what you do and I’ll buy/read it whenever it’s done. 🙂

  23. PBW says:

Given the length of time other popular authors take between books, I think your fans will forgive you for taking your time to produce a quality product. I also was happy to see that you have exceeded the page limit you set for yourself. While I understand you aren’t paid by the word, so some page count discipline is in order, the larger the book, the more time I get to spend in the fabulous world you have created. So you keep writing and I will keep a few dollars earmarked for this next book.

  24. Darakna says:

Good book always wins over fast book!
No fast endings like in some other stories I read these days, please. Make it lengthy and good, Mr. Weeks.
I am a bit sad it’s not happening this year, but hey, it’s March already ain’t it? What’s another few months! =)

    Thanks for the update,
    enjoy your work!

  25. Rafael says:

I didn’t even dream that the new book would come in 2013. I thought it would be around Christmas 2014. This is coming much faster than I anticipated. Keep up good work 🙂

  26. David says:

I am just excited to hear something. i used to have book sites I’d go to to be able to know publishing dates but those are hard for me to find now days. I think social media has ended the days of keeping up a book publishing schedule since authors have their own sites and just publish updates there or on twitter.

  27. Charlie says:

I’d rather wait a couple of years for outstanding fiction than have half finished, mediocre crap shoved at me every few months.

“Do it once, do it right” seems to be a forgotten mantra in the world of SFF, so thanks for making sure you produce your best work instead of the marketable standard.

We’ll wait, and patiently, knowing that when we finally get our hands on your book, it’ll have been more than worth it.

  28. Kylar is my yum yum kins says:

We all love your books, Mr. Weeks!!! And if you can’t get them out rapid-fire because you’re making them more sweeping and moving and epic, then gosh darn it you take all the time you need!! Your fans love you and want you to do whatever you need for these books to come out the way you desire. The only thing we’d ever hate you for is if you spat out total crap for the sake of getting books published for money, cuz that ain’t right! But you’re one awesome dude, and you’d never treat us like that!! Y’all got integrity, and we see it in your characters, and more time waiting is just more time to grow closer to the characters we already have in your books. Just… please don’t wait like 40 years or something to publish the next one. I’d hate not to be able to finish the series because I’m an old lady who’s blind as a bat!

  29. Travis says:

I want to say first you are an amazing author…well worth the wait for yet another GREAT book, with that being said, how dare you leave me hanging the way you just did in your latest book of the LIghtbringer series ???? You so know the three main things I am talking about… ROFC C= crying for more, you are just EVIL but it in the best way. Keep up the great work and I am looking forward to many more books from you.

  30. Weston Kim says:

I love these updates! To be completely honest I feel like when things (like books/movies/games) from one series come out just about a year apart it feels cheapened a bit to me. I feel like a year and a half between installments/releases is a much more appropriate time that makes me feel like they aren’t just being cranked out as fast as possible, but actually have a lot of attention and effort put into them. Waiting for longer than a year between books may be tough, but it is definitely worth it in my opinion. And your books are always worth the wait.

  31. Jesslyn says:

I have loved your stuff since before it was the cool thing to do. I just ask–please no more cliffhangers. We deserve better and will keep reading as long as you need turn out books as good as you’ve done in the past. Frankly, even if you were only doing 1/2 as good, I’d probably remain a fan..

  32. SoullessDemonai says:

Woo! I can’t wait! … well, I can, I just severely do NOT want to for the next installment of this brilliant series.

  33. Are says:

I could handle a thousand pages (or more) this fall or winter…

  34. Christopher says:

What do you mean The Blood Mirror is a good title for book 4? As in Quatrology? Am I reading too much into this?

    1. CAPSLOCK says:

      Hi Christopher,
Brent talks a little more about this in an interview here: http://www.fantasybookaddict.com/2012/08/16/brent-weeks-interview/ .
(Nope, you’re not reading too much into it!)

  35. mmonitor says:

I can’t wait but the longer the story the better so take your time.

  36. Mohammed Eshaque says:

Thanks, for the explanation and for throwing in some humor…I’ll shall continue to patiently wait, untill that day arrives when I can go and buy Lightbringer #3.

  37. KellyMulyca says:

Thanks for the update. I am anxiously awaiting the next part, but would rather wait and enjoy quality. Please take your time so that it will be the level of the first two. I am absolutely sure that it will be worth the wait.

  38. Ashkit says:

Take all the time you need. As itching as I may be to read the next instalment, I would MUCH rather read a fantastic book after long anticipation than several crappy books in quick succession. Not that your books would ever be crappy, but you get my drift.
Also, I just wanted to convey how impressed I was with the difference between your Way of Shadows series and this one. Most of the time when an author writes several series they are very similar, at least in tone if not in plot. I love both of yours and they are so very different! What a pleasure to read someone who is so obviously passionate about what they do, and puts their heart and soul into it.
As Robert Frost once said: “No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader.”
All the best, I look forward to reading more of your work!
    Ash

  39. Tim says:

Wow, not a single negative comment about the increased wait. Well, some were half-negative, but the overall tone of each was positive. I am very surprised and impressed.

Basically, as has already been said a couple dozen times here, I’m happy for a longer wait for a better book. Maybe not a Patrick Rothfuss length wait (although it’s excusable at least if the wait’s in order to polish things to his standard), but yeah. I would be disappointed if you did anything less than take the time you need to make this book as good as possible.

Also, I think Brent may need to start adding a couple of hundred pages to his length estimates.

  40. Eric in OH says:

I am so devastated that I will have to wait longer for my dose of amazing writing, but I am so glad that you have chosen not to just churn out books like so many writers do. Getting the story right and bringing life (or death!) to the characters as their destinies dictate is so important and makes the difference between a good read and a great read. Keep up the good work and I am absolutely foaming at the mouth for the next story.

Thanks for a great reading journey.

  41. Terry Bland says:

I’m sure it will be awesome! All of your books have been so far. Love reading your work, and can’t wait to read the next installment. Keep up the great work!

  42. Teresa Pummill says:

I can wait if you don’t disappoint.

  43. Kyle Loechner says:

    Hey Brent,

If you haven’t already, you might want to check out “The Four Hour Work Week” by Timothy Ferriss. I think it’s a ‘must read’ for any self-employed individual. It helps you identify which tasks are the truly crucial tasks that only YOU can do, and then you either abandon, automate, or outsource the rest. It doesn’t make sense for an author to engage in a “$10/hr task” when they could pay someone $10/hr to do it and then use that new-found time to write more, earning $40/hr or $80/hr (whatever).

I’m not targeting you specifically, mind you. But I’ve heard a lot of professional authors recently lament how it seems like the actual *writing* is becoming a smaller and smaller part of their job. And that’s a shame.

Either way, I love your books, and I trust you to do the right thing with the series. If that means waiting, then i shall wait 🙂

Good luck and hope you drive up to Seattle some time soon so i can meet you at a book signing or what have you.

  44. pat dupuis says:

hey i don’t care if it takes u two more years. if it is as good as any other of your book. keep up the good work Weeks.

  45. Daniel says:

    I have to say, I’m starting to like your editor less and less… ¬.¬;

  46. Alisa says:

Thank you, both for the rebuttal to Neil Gaiman (who I completely love, but also completely disagree with his stance on GRRM) and for this honest, respectful letter to your fans. I can’t wait to read your next book, but I completely understand that sometimes the writing process takes longer than expected, or that other things in a writer’s life might cause delays. That’s okay. I can wait for things I know will be worth it. I just don’t appreciate certain other authors’ attitude toward their readers, and that attitude does tarnish my pleasure in their books. It’s wonderful to discover you’re not one of those authors.

  47. AJC says:

Weeks… It’s your BBQ and it taste good. Waiting a bit longer for the party to start is no big deal. I’ll just stretch out here, rubbing my satisfied belly. Meanwhile we’re looking forward to the disco ball drop so we can get down with the Blood Mirror.

  48. Pat says:

While I loathe the waiting, it’s like watching the clock tick by during the last minutes of a long class on a Friday before a week long holiday…the end result is so deliciously worth it that I’m content to just sit there and doodle until the appointed time arrives.

And if you ask me, the longer the better. I finished both “The Black Prism”, and “The Blinding Knife”, in about 24 hours a piece…whose got time for sleep when you’re reading a great book right?…and I still wanted more.

  49. JenMo says:

    Thank you for the u

  50. JenMo says:

Thank you for the update. I’m eager for the next book, and updates really take the edge off the waiting.

  51. jason knott says:

crushed. however i would rather wait for excellence than be pissed off because you rushed through it. so thank you ser for putting in the hours for us. i broke my foot when i skipped out on my class to get book2. that is how good your shit is. i read it while on pain killers so naturally had to re read it a second time. was planning on skipping class again for 3 but this way i wont have to break my foot cause i will be done with school and will call off work and will be in no hurry to get back on time.

  52. Sabrina Regier says:

My husband started reading the night angel trilogy while i read the dragonlance collection. he harassed me all the time to put down my Weiss and hickman and pick up the books he was reading. Im no slouch, I read EVERY book that had anything to do with dragonlance series (prequels background on races, side stories. i wanted the story to feel complete). After doing a quick read of a smutty grey series i figured… I’ll give Brent Weeks a shot. I did it with Steve berry when i competed all Dan browns books.

I picked up the first book in the night angel series and read it. then the second book.. loved it… by the time i got to Beyond the Shadows I was sold!
What’s next. I read The Black Prism with a clear head not wanting to compare anything to previous books. The book was complete in maybe 3 days.(i spent 2 weeks in the hospital so i had a lot of time to kill) I fell in love, The Blinding Knife is more than i expected. I am very glad to hear the next installment is well on its way. (I’ll just have to find another series to read until then). Thank You For All Your Amazing Hard Work. If i hadn’t studied fine arts and medievil Europe i would have leaned towards writing, that’s how much you’ve inspired me 🙂

  53. Ed says:

Keep up the great work! I haven’t been ‘excited’ by an author since first picking up the Amber Series from Zelazny many many years ago.

  54. Em says:

Firstly, thank you so much for just letting us know how long to hold our breaths for! (At least…we can try, I don’t know that we can really pull that off..) It’s a kind of relief to know, at least for me anyway, so now we can cool our heels and look forward to September at least for an exciting update!

Secondly, I hope people aren’t too annoyed at you Mr. Weeks. That’s pretty selfish, and it isn’t like we don’t already have lots of stuff we can read of yours in the meantime! Even if we may or may not have re-read said material 5 times…….or more already….

Once again, thanks so much for dedicating so much time to your avid fans and readers; you say you wouldn’t be where you are without us, but it does take a damned good writer to get us to be such amazing and loyal fans ;D!

  55. Ari says:

Disappointed to hear it won’t come out this year, however I understand and agree with your decision of quality over quantity. I read the Night Angel series in literally a week. Book one took me one day and the others only slightly longer, a couple days a piece. Honestly since I picked up the night angel series and read it you have become one of my favorite authors and so far the Lightbringer series is just as good if not better then the night angel series. Keep up the good work Brent I am eagerly waiting for book 3.

  56. Eric says:

Well….. sad, happy, i’m all confuse… fell like a kid waiting for christmas…. but christmas is far far away….. But knowing that the gift will be huge…. or better a kid born on december 24!

Seriously, it’s been a love story since the first book… found it accidently… was buying books in english in a bookstore away from home, i can not find books in english where i am ( except on the internet)….had 15 bucks to spend and pick the “The way of shadows” paper back” kindda by curiosity and told myself why not…. boys was i in for a treat…. more than happy to contribute to your lavish life style…. as long as it’s as good…. which every time is better…. how you do it?

I must say on a more serious note that i have a large respect for the attitude and personal moral about your work ethic….. from the first book, you are my favorite author, and i have read all my classics …. i share the love too, i pass them to whom ever is willing to discover my favorite author….. i’ll wait for the next one….. unfortunatly …. but i have been wanting to read the night angel trilogy AGAIN… i guess i’ll have time….. As long as you keep writing…i’ll keep reading!

  57. Adriano says:

I cannot wait until the next Lightbringer installment! you really know how to set cliffhangers at the end of every book, keep the great work up, Weeks, i’m having to scavenge old books to read while waiting for this one! hahaha

  58. Paul says:

Although I am sad to know it will be a while before I am whisked away into the pages of another epic installment of such a fantastic piece of work, I like that it will be just as good if not better then these last two books! It’s not that they come out so slow, it’s that I love them so much I wish they would last longer! Your stories are the type that you just can’t put down and keep you entranced for multiple reading sessions! You are by far one of my favorite Authors and I think that your character development has a lot to do with it. I have never seen someone develop characters so well in my life. Keep up the good work Mr.Weeks!!!

  59. Martin says:

awesome! Calendar updated to check back in sept!

Let us know when we can pre-order the book on amazon!

  60. James Holt says:

I haven’t been this excited for a series in a long time. I took The Black Prism out from my library a few months back and had to return it unread. The second time I returned the book half way through it only to buy it online. I finished that and proceeded to purchase Lightbringer and even though I’m only a little more than half way through it I also bought the Night Angel trilogy omnibus. I applaud you craftsmanship and thank you not only for the dedication needed for such quality but also for the respect and dedication you have to your fans. I have every intention of preordering book three whenever it becomes available.

  61. Khevna says:

    You, sir, are awesome.

I loved the Night Angel Trilogy — have re-read it many times. I just started The Black Prism, and it’s pretty *awesome*. I’m psyched that there’s a book 2 (I just found out~!) and, hopefully, a book 3 in the future 🙂

  62. mattm says:

    Will patiently await… I can’t wait! !!

I am so glad to hear that the pride you take in your books precedes the income you can get for them. I think it’s already obvious in your writing, but still, you probably could have released this one without being thought of as “churning out” a book, but that you would hold it past a soft deadline you had announced publicly so that you could make it every bit as good as you would hope is something that takes guts.

I for one am not disappointed at all. I would rather wait years to read a piece of literary genious than to have disappointing stories readily available. Every book you’ve written has been utterly captivating, and it’s wonderful to hear how much you still enjoy it.

All the best to you and yours.

  64. Terry says:

I was under the impression it was just going to be a trilogy; you just made my day with the hint of book 4!

  65. Aenrot says:

Most important news.. book 4 !!!!!

  66. Jeremy says:

I was lucky enough to not discover The Night Angel series until all the books were out and I could read the entire series at once. So immediately I picked up the newly released Black Prism and fell in love, that was until the end, in which I cursed your name many times. All because I was so enthralled and in good sport at that time, Now two years later I finally has a chance to re-read the Black Prism followed immediately by The Blinding Knife. After about four nights immersed in your magical world I am again cursing your name with admiration and respect for your work. Here’s to more time spent daydreaming about being able to split light.

  67. Tony says:

Frankly, excellence and value for money always beat the hell out of speed of production.

I’d rather be thrilled with the result than get something earlier and think the very thoughts about commercialism and pressue on authors to produce that you mentioned above.

I have to say that the between the shadows stuff, and the lightbringer series, you have two of my all time favourite trilogies. that lightbringer is moving to a quadrilogy doesnt surprise me in the slightest – so much material so little room!

Take your time, get it right and how you want it, and this humble reader will be happy!

  68. Jamie says:

So I reckon Gavin will get full colors back
Karris or for an will die
Kip might become the leader of the blackguard
I have a feeling the gate at the end of the world might get opened because of that mention about the armada.
Any thoughts on up oming events in book 3

  69. condorzo says:

The ending of the book two left me in the middle of nowhere. I don’t know the book end until I saw the glossary ( the book was that good!). I want to know if Kip was Gavin’s son or Dazen. Hope book 3 reveal that. Thank you for writing this awesome book. I really like martial art and magic in your book. Waiting for the next book!

    1. Zerax says:

It was revealed in both one and two that Kip is Gavins son. The real Gavin

  70. Gavin Guile says:

I’m rowing a boat hoping my colors come back…I’ve been color blind for over a week maybe they do in the third book maybe not….I only hope when they come back, because they will, I’ll be able to draft pure Black and White as well… not to mention the legendary color Plith (purple).. you know I would really like to surprise my father, he probably thinks I’m dead.

I wonder what happened to Kip the last thing I remember was was the white knife stabbing me it felt like the world fell away everything turned grey, lifeless I was sure I’m about to die then waking up in this god forsaken Ship with that pirate gunner acting like a he owns the seven seas. I am powerless so on I’ll row until the light touches me again

hahahaha, just made that up use it don’t use it I only love the story it’s great please o please hurry up with Blood mirro

    1. Damonn Stormranger, Crown Prince of Torilli. (Darren Surch) says:

      Dear Gavin,

I welcome your spirit from whatever dark place it is that wretches go when they die.

You have truly reinforced why it was so critical and necessary for Dazen to kill you, for fear that you might try to tell your own story.

I currently have my necromancer preparing the necessary spells to silence you in the afterlife, Also I have found and purchased a planar compass in the hope that I can find the world you once called home, find your remains and permanently finish Dazen’s work.

Since everyone knows Sigil is the center of the multiverse it seem only logical to begin there, your world and plane has to be somewhere. Speak not again as this only serves to provide bearing in my search to count aloud your very numbered days.

I will see all the wealth I possess expire in my quest to finally silence you in this post-life that you dare to wail from.

      Damonn Stormranger

  71. Alexander says:

thank you for telling us an approximate 🙂 i just hope it will be out for my next B-day (march). was hooked on night-angel by a friend, and now can’t stop rereading these. wonderfully in depth storyline similar to some of the great anime.

  72. JM says:

I’m glad to hear you’re not part of the “Martin is not your bitch” point of view. While i do agree that he has the right to do what ever he wants, i know i would never buy any of his books knowing i probably wont see the end of them till i have grandkids! but thats mostly because i know myself enough to forget all the major events that made me love the book in the first place. Luckily i never heard of the night angle trilogy till the last one came out, to this day its the only book i re-read whenever i’m bored, and is the only book i’m constantly recommending to everyone i know. With the light bringer series I’m more than happy to wait a couple of years for the next issue knowing its going to surpass whatever high expectations i have, but the idea of having to wait 6 years to see what happens next in the story seems insane to me.

  73. Vito says:

Just finished reading the “The Blinding Knife” for the second time and found that I couldn’t put this book down, again, even though I already knew what was going to happen. Love this story, and can’t wait until the third book comes out. Thanks Brent for not rushing to push this book, my anticipation of another great book supersedes my desire for it to come out sooner. You’re one of my favorite authors.

  74. Jen says:

Your brilliant! The lightbringer series is one of the best if not the best books I have read ever. Even my son is just as excited as I am for the 3 rd. I’m trying to patiently wait for this book. Lol. I know it will be worth the wait. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I love it.

  75. Dolores Brache says:

Don,t let people rush your dream it’s your dreams, and enjoy the road. I do envy (white of course) the gift you have, to be able to create a world in your mind and to share it with .It’s worth to wait for the next, I am waiting for it but take your time.

  76. can’t wait, and am very much looking forward to it .

  77. Jonathan Gilmartin says:

I cant wait to get my hands on #3 in the lightbringer series. I am a huge fan of the night angel triolgy, ive read them many times. At the end of beyond the shadows i was crushed, not because the ending it was great, just the fact that i wanted to keep reading and know what happens next even after the book ended. i didnt want to stop reading. Good luck on your new book, im looking forward to it. and who knows maybe maybe you could look into a movie contract for your night angel books, just saying it could make a badass trilogy!!

  78. Durel Hauser says:

Love the Lightbringer books. Just finished listening to the first two again.. Wish the third, fourth and …. were done but I get it.. Just please don’t pull a George RR Martin on us.. heh 3 years is a bit long between books.. maybe you series will get picked up by HBO too?? Would be interesting to see an on screen adaptation. Sometimes the bite.. But Game of thrones has shown that they can stay true to the books and still be popular.

I have been a fantasy fan for a long time. I have read thousands of books and I got as much pleasure from yours as any I can remember. They have to rank right up there with the best in a long time. I also like long books. Its like a 3 course meal!!

Good luck with your writing, and waiting eagerly for the next book.

  79. Halie says:

I cannot wait! You have become my favorite author of all time– non of the other books I read can even be compared to yours!
I’m glad that this series is not being abandoned!

  80. Pat says:

You do realize, perhaps unintentionally..or not, that you have done enough to make quite a few of us want it more? Ha ha…eh? eh?! EH?! Book 4? A 4th book!? I thought it was another trilogy, and now I see a possible hint to a 4th in the series?!

Love your work, Brent…but seriously…you’re killing me. I was eagerly anticipating book 3 and the continuation and finale of an awesome series (again), but now there is more awesomeness to be had after the 3rd…

I thought it was bad enough that after reading the end of The Blinding Knife, I continued to flip those last three pages multiple times in hopes of more lines to magically appear to continue the story.

Good luck, keep up the awesome work…and don’t mind the drool marks all over the comments page

  81. Diva says:

Looking forward to book 3 – the wait will be worth it !

  82. The Night Angel series has become one of my all time treasured series that I visit time and time again. I was very hesitant to start another book from the same author because I did not want to be let down.

Very happy to report, I am not let down. I started reading The Black Prisim when I was on staff duty (sit and watch a phone for 12 hours through the night) and I actually read about 400 pages and could not get enough. The same thing has happened with the The Blinding Knife, just without a phone to watch.

Very much enjoy your books and I am glad to read that you dont “crank out books” to fill your pockets. You should fill your pockets with pride, sir. Pride in knowning that you have done a great service to readers everywhere.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with the pride being cushioned by the large ammounts of well deserved cash that should be in your pockets.

I look foreward to “donating” more to the cushion fund in exchange for hours of enjoyment.

  83. PeteinNYC says:

Looking forward to book 3. Take your time (NOT TOO MUCH TIME) and do it right!

  84. hfr says:

I’ve enjoyed all of your books and am looking forward to book 3 in this series.

While I would like to be able to read it right now, write book 3 to be worthy of the pride that you put into your work.

Thanks for all of the enjoyment that you have provided in your books.

  85. Dave James Ralph says:

    Mr. Weeks
Well obviously it’s a slight disappointment to be waiting a little longer than I had hoped, which in no way is a criticism, but instead a compliment to your amazing talent as a writer and your incredible ability to write a story which just grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go until the end.
I originally picked up the way of shadows at an airport and decided “what the hey it’s got to be worth a read whilst I’m waiting for a flight”, what a surprise I received, and I then had to walk straight into a book store the hour I landed and search for the shadows edge. It’s fair to say I was an instant fan.
But to echo the opinions of so many other fans. We appreciate all of your work and know that when book three is finished it will be everything we hope for and more. Also I’d like to sincerely thank you for taking the time to let us know honestly what’s happening, such a rare quality, it needs to be acknowledged.

  86. Victor says:

    Hey Brent,

Love your work, your books have traveled with my all over the world (Brazil, South Africa, Hawaii and even Viet Nam).

I am waiting for your next book and can barely stay calm 🙂

    Best regards from Poland,
    Vic

  87. Cy Phi says:

While I am saddened that book 3 will not be available by Christmas, I am glad to know that you are working diligently and Orbit hasn’t done something…foolish. Truth be told, I only found your series because The Way of Shadows had a cover that looked like something from Assassin’s Creed. While I was initially disappointed because it wasn’t AC, I was thrilled to discover that it was vastly better.

In the mean time, I hope you will grace us with your presence at Dragon Con again. It was a pleasure meeting you, and I hope you enjoyed your stay.

Thanks again for the update. We are all eagerly awaiting Gavin and Kip’s return.

  88. Donna Sargent says:

Ah well, Waiting just means that I will have to refresh my memory when the time comes and re-read books 1 and 2.
Really enjoyed them and looking forward to the continuation of the series.

  89. Martha G says:

Take as long as you need, and make the book as long as possible. I will wait impatient for your book.

  90. Fay Bentley says:

I’ve just finished reading The Black Prism and The Blinding Knife back to back over the last two weeks.

I’ve never posted a comment to a writer before, but here goes.

    I loved reading your books.

I love the world you’ve created in my head. The characters that I think about during my day. The unforced humour of your writing. The look on my husbands face when I say, “I would have drafted green for that”.

So well done and thank you. And thank you in advance for what is yet to come. I cannot wait, but I will as I’m quietly confident you’re going to make it worth my time.

Keep up the good work, and bring Kip back to me as soon as is feasible.

  91. gazzmann says:

    Mr. Weeks
First I would like to thank you for enriching my reading life. I read quite extensively and came across your Night Angel series via a book club recommendation that I am so glad I took tge chance to try. I am however a little disappointed that a short (or epically long which would be my preference) novella has not been written that would cover five years after the end of the last Night Angel describing the sword fight between Kylar Stern and Lantano Garuwashi that I had high hopes of ‘seeing’.
Saying that though thank you for introducing me to your wonderful world.
I am now in the middle of book two of the Lightbringer series and once again thank you for enriching my reading life as you constantly surprise me with storylines that I cannot guess as to their conclusion. The characters are so well written it is hard not to fall into their lives and hope for the best. I am glad to learn that you will not be cutting corners just to line your pockets as some writers sadly do. Please don’t hold back with your writing as I find your imagination one of the best to date. Thanks again
    Gazzmann

    1. Damon stormranger 'crown prince of torilli' says:

Gassman, Brent has signed in for another night angel trilogy after the lightbringer trilogy (now quadrilogy) is completed. So keep eyes open from late 15 early 16 I guess

  92. Adam says:

Please please please make this go on forever you are my inspiration!!!!:) I don’t think I’ve ever come across magical fanaticism that covers such a well understood spectrum 🙂 kind regards Adam Bentley

  93. Lee Ann says:

Take your time and it right, Just dont end up another “George RR Martin”. I dont think I could stand waiting years between books.

  94. Chris says:

First off would like to say I have introduced multiple people to the night angel trilogy and none have been disappointed. Only started them because the cover caught my eye. Luckily all three were out because I would have been devastated to have to wait. I say that only as an excuse for not having read the second lightbringer book. First one was great but I knew there would be more. Might have to bite the bullet and go ahead so I can wait impatiently with the rest of your fans.
Still want more Vi and Kylar though!

  95. Devansh says:

I started the night angel series when i had nothing better to do,no one recommended it to me nor had i have ever heard about the author before but after i started reading i just couldn’t put the book down, its an amazing ,mind blowing piece of work.I finished the whole series in 4 days, and i have read some of the greatest pieces of fantasy and fiction and this series certainly if not better ties off them pretty well. After that i picked up the lightbringer series and it is certainly as good as the previous one and i am ardently waiting for the part/parts yet to come.Hope they will be out soon.

  96. a fan says:

After having been asked to play in the book trailer for the first book I had to check out what the book was about (I didn’t even know they had book trailers !!)
I fell in love and have waited patiently for book two. I guess I’ll have to do the same for book three, do I understand correctly there will be a book four as well ?
Please take your time to write it as good as you humanly can 😀

  97. Adam. B says:

You are a legend Mr Weeks!

    1. Bookaholic says:

Tis a blessing and a curse I am afraid. Quality in a book is to be commended, but we must know what happens! Cliffhangers are my greatest fear, and the hanger at the end of the Blinding Knife killed me. Bring us the third as soon as you can Mr. Weeks.

  98. Q says:

    Mr. Weeks

(Anything in this post cannot and will not be held against myself or any person that may be mentioned.)
    (Just in case…)

You, my good fellow, have ruined my life. You might as well clip my left ear and send me to the Ilytians. I am stuck on my couch, chair, bed, etc. reading your amazingly masterful writing skills. I haven’t been hooked on a set of series since Erin Hunter wrote the Warriors series. (LionBlaze rocks!!) I am in awe of your undisputed championing of sarcasm and dry humor. I was shellshocked when I realized I’d have to wait till September. I will read your new book with a passion whatever you call it.

    Impatiently waiting,
    Q

  99. Wolfy says:

    Your books are my T.A.R.D.I.S.
I shall continue to travel aimlessly through the Spectrum in search of the destination that is Book 3.
    Until then, Oh Great One.

  100. Ricardo says:

Mr. Weeks, in a hurry you rose to the top of my list of favorite writers. I rank you up there with R.A. Salvatore. The first book I read was The Black Prism. I was sold that fast. I later blew through the Night Angel trilogy. I’m anxiously, and impatiently awaiting the next installment. Please keep up the the hard work and thank your mom for giving us your amazingness.

  101. Kristoffer says:

I have read everyone one of your books. I read the Night Angel Trilogy and the following books in that series twice, and it was amazing both times. However the Light bringer series is so good and inspirational I just can’t wait for more. Thank you so much for all the boring days and nights you saved me from, but now nothing I read can compare, Damn you. You have cultivated a fan for life in me and i just simple can not wait for whats next. thank you, thank you, THANK YOU.

    1. Søren says:

      Hey Kristoffer,
Maybe you should try to get a hold of Patrick Rothfuss, a fellow fantasy writer. It feels a litte wrong to praise another writer on this forum, but his books might just be what you are looking for while waiting 🙂

      1. Krane says:

There are so many good sci if-fantasy writers out that spin the most incredible yarns, Robin Hobb, Jennifer Fallon, Elspeth Cooper,Joe Abercrombie,John Kirkpatrick, the list goes on it doesn’t matter you’re preferred style all of these authors will have you hooked. Not to take anything away from Brent Weeks He’s certainly one of my favourite’s. I’ve read the night angel trilogy, brilliant. For a bit of reading in between try these authors, can’t wait for the third light bringer instalment ,and hope like hell he can make a fourth.

        1. Mat Chamley says:

Not one mention of the late, great David Gemmell?????

          1. Vader says:

I am realy liking brent weeks but I’m with u mat can’t no one touch the great David g and I’ve tried

          2. Vader says:

It takes a really great book to become a”legend”

        2. James says:

I highly recommend Patrick Rothfuss. I just finished A wise mans fear (book 2 in the Kingkiller chronicles) and it was amazing. definitely a good series to read while waiting for the next lightbringer book.

      2. CarolynLG says:

Excellent suggestion as Patrick Rothfuss’ books are just as engaging. However, you have to be ready to start yet another unfinished series. This is a frustrating time to be a fantasy/sci fi reader.

Just please don’t pull a George RR Martin on us! or worse yet, a Robert Jordan (though at least Brandon Sanderson did get that one finished!)

      3. Sky says:

I’ve also read Rothfuss and Weeks, both amazing. Also recommend Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, and Terry Goodkind. All their books rate among the best I’ve ever read.

    2. Hannavas says:

      agreed

    3. Gghfkt says:

Try the wheel of time by Robert jorden or the stormlight archive by branden Sanderson. But yes the light bringer series is extremely well written, looking forward to the next book.

      1. Matteo says:

Wheel of Time is just depressing. And long. So verrrrrrrry long… But Its still a great series.

    4. Mark Hedl says:

Yes, but read those books as slowly as you can manage as said “other author” is leaving a years long trail of expectant readers in his wake as well. (No offense meant Weeks and thank you for the detailed update!)
      -MH

    5. Vivienen says:

Thanks for the update Weeks. My daughter introduced your work to me and I must say you do write very readable books 😀 As for the third Lightbringer book: take your time. After the wait I’ve had/am having for Melanie Rawns Capta’ls Tower 5 months is no time at all. I look forward to what I am sure will be a very absorbing read.

You keep writing and we’ll keep reading! 🙂

    6. Hugh Jazz says:

You should try reading some of John Marco’s novels. I can’t recall the series names off of the top of my head, but the books are called “Eyes of God”, “The Devils Armour”, and “The Sword of Angels”. My personal favourite series is The Malazan Book of the Fallen, but that is not a slight project. It should take many months (up to a year or so) to truly finish and understand each story. Steven Erikson and Ian C. Esslemont are some of the most creative and brilliant authors I’ve ever read about. Brent Weeks is fantastic too, but sometimes you gotta look elsewhere while authors are writing.

  102. Rikkie Wolf says:

Weeks I have read all of your books, The Night Angel Trilogy became one of my Favorite books to read and listen to when I’m to busy to be able to pick up a book, Same goes for the Light Bringer, I can’t wait to see what will happen next. Your books have also Inspired me, I have been a short story writer for years now slowly working on getting my first book published (so much fun trying to do that) But your books have shown me how far i can go with my own stories and my book changing how i look at my story and where it will end up. I want to thank you for what you do and please keep on Writing Maybe one day I too will be able to make a living off of writing.

  103. Harold says:

I am a fan of Terry Brooks and to be honest he’s a hard author to beat, but Weeks comes close. I started reading The Night Angel and became instantly hooked. I love The Night Angel Trilogy. I was a bit disappointed when I found out that I could only get The Perfect Shadow by downloading it or spend $135+ for the hard cover. I spent the money and it wasn’t a disappointment. The Black Prism almost made me stop reading Weeks’ work. The first 100 pages was hard to get through. But I stuck it out and it is a great story and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next installment. “The Blood Mirror” makes a great title and I’m hoping the that he makes a fourth book. I really enjoy Weeks’ work and I hope he keeps up the great work. I would really like to see a Brooks and Weeks co-authored series, but that’s just me. I also think that if done right The Night Angel trilogy would make a great 3 part movie. I just hope it doesn’t screw up the Trilogy I have played out in my head.

  104. Christina Jacobson says:

After reading your Night Angel Trilogy my entire taste in books changed. Before I read your books I was drawn to more “safe” fantasy books, like the kind Terry Brooks would produce. Not that I don’t respect him, he is an amazing writer, but now I find stories such as those cannot hold my interest. I am not really sure that is a good thing however; because now I have such high expectations of the authors I read I have a hard time finding books I like.

Fans bother you about when the next book is going to be out, and it is hard to wait. But I appreciate you taking the time to write the book till it meets your standards. I’d rather it be amazing and wait a little bit longer then get a sloppy sequel. It is quite evident that you are putting your best effort into writing for us and I thank you for that.

    ** KEEP PORTLAND WIERD! **
    🙂

  105. tim whitely says:

I’ve just finished the Lightbringer books having loved the Nightangel books. The character building and magic creation was fantastic. Also read the Neil Gaiman comments from your link and fully agree with his (and your) position. I’ve been been waiting for further instalments from Patrick Rothfuss and Brandon Sanderson but I realise (as they must have) that the series probably couldn’t be finished in one book. The Kingkiller series, for instance, is at a point where to finish the series in one book would be unsatisfying. Thank you for your worlds you have lent us. I’ve visited them, with your implied permission, and enjoyed the trip. Look forward to more. I’m reading Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, Scott Lynch and Joe Abercrombie at the moment. Could you advise another author into whose work I could immerse myself?

    1. Margaret says:

Give Guy Gavriel Kay’s Fionavar Tapestry a go.

    2. Lightbriger says:

Mark Lawrence!!! I promise you won’t be disappopnted

    3. Rhys says:

Anthony Ryan Blood song and Will Wight the travelers gate trilogy. Awsome books. As for the third in the series Brent take your time, many of your readers have been taught patience by George R.R. Martin, Patrick Rothfuss and Robert Jordan. We can survive a little wait for a great book.

  106. Norman Bartley says:

I love Brent Weeks books and have read everything he has published to date. The Night Angel trilogy was amazing and actually got me reading. I couldn’t find many books or authors that could hold my attention until I found Weeks. Every series he has written would make great movies as long as the screenwriter stays true to the books. I can’t wait till the next Lightbringer book hits the shelves. No matter the name.

    1. Johannes says:

I totally agree. It is not very often that I think that a book would be suitable being turned into a TV show but Lightbringer absolutely is and should be.

  107. Josh says:

I have also read all of your books sir. The Lightbringer series has been a pleasure to read an I am eagerly looking forward to the third book. I do understand you taking your time to enjoy your passion and I appreciate that I can enjoy your creations. Longtime favorite book series’ have been the Sword of Truth series and the Wheel of Time series but to be perfectly honost none of them struck me on the same level that the NightAngel Trilogy did. That series I can read over and over and it never fails to inspire me. Like your fan Christinia Jacobson, after reading that series my taste in books has taken a very much more gritty and real turn. You have a fan for life here, I look forward to all of work to come, whenever they come. Thanks so much for working so hard to bring us these stories.

  108. Johannes says:

I hope for an update on this post:-)
I am reading a lot of fantasy and I rarely enjoyed books as I did yours. I have a masters degree in chemisty and I just loved the concept of magic born out of the spectrum of light. I hope very much that you give us the next book really soon but please let us wait if you have the feeling you may do better by working a bit longer on it. I cannot imagin that anyone who reads your books wouldn’t want to wait for this book. You very fast became one my top five fantasy authors and I hope you are feling ok in the company of George Martin, Guy Gavriel Kay, Robert Jordan and Robin Hobb. Best wishes from Germany.

  109. Karmela says:

    Hello!
I’m 14 year – old girl and I want to be a writer. Fantasy is my favourite to reading and The Lightbringer is realy great (I think it’s better then The Night Angel Trilogy). When I’m reading your books I like thinking “One day I’ll write so good fantasy book like Brent!”. Your books are funny and interesting – keep it up! I hope I’ll be so good in writing like you 🙂
P.S. Sorry for any mistakes – english isn’t my native language.

  110. HerosDamitorum says:

I love your books, I’ve read every last one, I even purchased an e-reader just to read some of them. I have to say when I first picked up book one of the Night Angel Trilogy I was skeptical to say the least. I’m not big on reading books from writers I’ve never heard of; however, I gave it a read & never regretted any of it, you sir are an amazing author keep up the fantastic work. if you do you can expect me to continue purchasing both your physical and digital versions, because I just can’t put them down! I’m re-reading the Light Bringer series again for the 6th time now & can not wait for the next installment. I’m positive it will be worth every second of the wait though.
Thanks for the hours of enjoyment your books have brought to all your fans
    Sincerely,
    An avid fan

I think for my personal taste, the brilliant story telling ability aside, the story of the light bringer series is marvelous, interwoven and just magical, take all the time you need Brent, (not that you need me to tell you that). And if its anything like the last one ill be one incredibly satisfied customer.

On the subject of authors who people liked, I found the most useful way to find books i would enjoy was to use the books app on ipad and see what other people who bought brent’s very fine works also bought. And as mentioned the names that seemed to crop up were:

Brandon Sanderson, (i started with the mistborn trillogy)
    Peter Brett (debut)
    Patrick Rothfuss (debut)

Those three for me combined the style I like, the uniqueness of concept and some pretty good story telling, and did it nearly as well as the lightbringer series.

Mark Lawrence (broken empire series) is a bit darker and less magic driven, much more akin the night angel, though personally it didnt suck me in.

Michael Sullivan, (riyria revelations series) once again closer to the night angel trillogy, less heavy on the magic. Not as dark and disturbing, but it got me hooked all the same.

The Night Angel Trilogy has been my favorite series of books since i read the first the chapter, i just fell in love with those books so your really going to have to do your best to top the Night Angel Trilogy.
Sincerely, your slave and servant, Hannavas.
PS. Kylar is my fictional hero, your my real life hero. Thanks for everything you’ve written. You’ve made me one hell of a happy girl.

    I am waiting.
    You know you’re good.
As insensitive as this may sound
I really want to read the finished stories from you.
    Work harder
    Work faster.
Don’t leave it for some other writer to finish.
    No disrespect intended.

  114. Logan says:

    Brent Weeks,

You’re a great author. I’ve given your books my sole attention the last few weeks, and I just finished the Binding Knife. You’ve got a great habit of leaving off at random spots that make it to where I won’t rest til I finish your next book.

    WAIT. NOT TILL 2014?

    *cries*.

Keep Writing, Brent Weeks. This has been my favorite series, ever.

    Thank you,

    Logan Cooper/

If you all want to take these stories to the next level (night angel and lightbringer) get the graphicaudio audiobooks of brents books. All of them are done and all very much worth the listen. These a.books are so fantastic with multiple actors/actress voicing the art peices. Sound effects and music too! If you have never listened to an audiobook, make these your first. Thwy are fantastic and add a depth you couldn’t experience otherwise. I love them brent! Never stop working with graphicaudio!

As a reader from the Netherlands, dependend on buying your books abroad (mostly) I was wondering when I could go out and try to find book 2. Imagine my surprise and delight when the second book was already out, the third book coming and a fourth book in the planning! And big books too!

  119. Hello Mr Weeks,

Many thanks for your hard work!

I am an avid fan, but as intensely interested as I am in your next in the Lightbringer series…I for one say, take as long as you need. I expect that the book will be excellent. So enjoy the process, take care of the family and you have at least 40 instant sales from the town where I come from in Australia when its done!

God bless you and yours mightily!

  120. Paul says:

There hasn’t been any other author I admire more then Mr. Weeks. I hope he comes out with more books soon. Can’t wait for Lightbringer 3. Going to be a spectacular edition to the series! 😀

I just hope that scene your describing that will stick with us forever isnt one where your killing off Gavin/Dazen..

    I would cry..

  123. Luke says:

Mr Weeks has got it right. Quality over quantity. Great men also find balance between work and family life. By the end of your career I have a feeling your name will be mentioned in the same sentence as the greats such and Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Thanks for your incredible stories and keep up the great work!

  125. Mark says:

Sooo… Its no longer 2013 master Weeks. In fact a good portion of 2014 seems to have vanished as well. Any updates on what our Prism friend has been up to over the past year?

    1. CAPSLOCK says:

      Hey Mark!
Brent’s assistant here. You can find his most recent update, from November, here: http://www.brentweeks.com/news/2013/11/the-broken-eye-update-3/. (Short answer: the book’s coming out August 26, 2014.)
You can also check out the cover and/or pre-order The Broken Eye here: http://www.brentweeks.com/news/2013/12/the-broken-eye-now-available-for-pre-order/
      Hope that helps!

I just heard of Neil Gaiman (like 3 weeks ago) and started reading one of his books but have read all of yours! I never felt the authors owed me a book at a certain time but I did stop reading Martin’s A Game of Thrones because it took too long between books and that was when Martin was popping them off fairly regularly around book 3: sadly when the show came out I read through the Wikipedia summaries of the books instead of reading the actual books, even though my best friend offered me hers to read.

Another writer I read an entire series over and over in my teens, then was so excited to buy a ‘sister’ series set few years in future about one of original character’s kids and after the first book in the new series the author died of a heart attack. I was devastated. I have not read the original books since and probably should google but as the fickle reader I am I can’t even remember the authors name. I think the series is called the Fisherman series or something like that (Sci fi): the author’s last name starts with an “F” I think. Now I just feel really guilty. My point being ‘please don’t die!’ or I’ll probably cry for a few days and never read your books again.

  127. For everyone in doubt: try Brandon Sanderson, starting with Mistborn, then Warbreaker and Elantris, moving to the his new (and truly epic) series.

Too bad right now there is a gap in Sanderson, Brent Weeks and Erikson/Esslemont book series. I’m starving…

Both Night Angel and Lightbringer books are really good, but the Lightbringer series is on whole another level. Brian Sanderson level or better, if you like.

  128. John Kolacz says:

Thank you for the wonderful Birthday present!!!!

  129. casey says:

I want to start by saying I love your books however it’s 2015 your last update was 2013 I’m not complaining I obviously want you to work at your own pace because I absolutely do want the best book you can produce in my hand while I’m reading….but how’s about an update

    1. brent says:

      Well, I mean… I did put out a book in 2014! 🙂
