A Graphic Novel Adaptation of The Way of Shadows

I’m so happy I can FINALLY share this! This afternoon, at their annual San Diego Comic-Con panel, Yen Press announced their upcoming adaptation of The Way of Shadows. The Way of Shadows graphic novel will be a single-volume adapation, and is slated for release in 2013.

Yen Press is a leader in the field of graphic novels, having adapted works like Witch & Wizard by James Patterson and Gail Carriger’s Soulless among many others. Their publishing schedule this year includes adaptations of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s The Chronicles of Nick, Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments and Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire: Claudia’s Story. Yen Press was founded by Kurt Hassler, the man many credit with bringing graphic novels and manga into the mainstream in the United States (in 2006, he was named #1 Most Powerful Person in American Manga Publishing). If you’re interested in learning more, you can check out www.yenpress.com.

I’ve already been discussing artists with Kurt whom we believe will bring a unique and bold vision to The Way of Shadows. I’ll announce who we’ve contracted and release samples of their art as I am able to do so.

Cool. I don’t read graphic novels at all really but I’m excited for this.

  2. kevin shortt says:

    great news, cant wait πŸ™‚

  3. BCsmith says:

That’s great news! Practically fell out of my seat when I read that.

I do have ONE question: being that TWOS isn’t exactly a short book (677 pages) how do you think yen press should go about adapting that into a single volume?

  4. Kylar is my yum yum kins says:

Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh! This will be awesome!! Dude dude dude!! Can’t wait to read them. Oh man oh man!!! πŸ˜€

  5. Angus says:

    Awesome! Can’t wait for this.

  6. Jeremy J. says:

Was happy til I saw the style.

    1. Syku says:

Just read on the Yen Press website that it would be a ‘western style comic’ which I’m assuming means more marvel and DC and less DBZ and Naruto.

To be honest I’m a little relieved, I can’t imagine TWOS could be pulled off seriously in a typical manga style. Andy Macdonald is adapting ZOO by James Patterson into a graphic novel and his art is amazing, no less. I can’t wait to see who they’ve contracted for my favourite book of a lifetime.

      1. Jeremy J. says:

        That makes me happy again.

I’m so sick of manga style. Let alone the Americanization of it.

      2. Cody says:

Seriously? I think TWOS would be great manga material, in fact Im hoping it’ll someday be made into an anime.

        1. Blase says:

I agree that American comics really don’t need to be in Anime/manga style, but the nature of Night Angel and the sort of characters, pacing, and action is so stylized and rich (at least how I imagine it when I’m reading) seems like it would best lend itself to being an anime style series. There’s really no other way you could do such brutal, three dimensional story telling AND get all the good magic, atmosphere, and all that for any kind of reasonable budget without losing a lot of what makes the trilogy great.

  7. Dp8351 says:

Never read one before but I’d read this. And yeah, I’d be curious to see how it’s condensed and how the artist portrays characters I have such strong images of in my mind.

  8. Ilidsor says:

I’ve never bought a graphic novel before but I’ll be sure to get this one πŸ™‚

  9. AJ says:

Sweet. More ways to give you my dollars to feed all of your materialistic needs!

  10. americanpianist says:

I’ve read a few graphic novels, but I do not own any.

This will be the first one I own.

Awesome news! I’m looking forward to a peak at the art style you decide to go with.

  11. Mohammad says:

Awesome! I’d just been wondering what Night angel and a few other series like Mistborn would look like in graphic novel form, so this is pretty cool. I’d hoped they’d be adapting it into a manga after seeing those images, something gritty and realistic, like the Blade of the Immortal or Death Note, but this is still really cool.

  12. Lex says:

Haha Brilliant! This will be a definite in my collection. Could only be better if Sejic did the art.

  13. Julzg says:

    Fab can’t wait x

  14. Erin says:

Awesome! I love when they make some of the books I love into graphic novels. I can’t wait to see it!

  15. Karolina says:

Oh I always said it would be a perfect graphic novel since I first read it!

  16. John Liam says:

Only ONE volume for the whole story?? Did I read that right? I am thinking three releases, one for each novel. There`s gonna be too much editing otherwise.

    1. Epic Steve says:

Well it says that its an adaptation of the way of shadows not the whole trillogy so its probably going to be three volumes which each one covering one of the books

  17. Steve Green says:

I love this, and hate it at the same time sadly. Love it because i want to read it and see how the artist will draw the story. Hate it because if they are going to do this, they should do it right, which means more than one volume please. There is too much story in TWOS to fit in one book.

  18. Axis says:

So this is only going to be the first novel of the Night Angel Trilogy? With no plans to actually complete the story and do the other two books? Good idea for the conversion, but it would be disappointing to only have a third of the story in this format…

  19. Tim says:

Not my sort of thing, but I guess this means you’ve attracted some attention. Hope it’s a success, though I won’t be buying it.

  20. J.S. says:

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m so excited right now this made my day! I really hope it’s as gritty as the actual book and not a wimpy version of it!!! I can’t wait for this!!

  21. Alex Restaino says:

Oh my gosh that is SO exciting hopefully this will boost the fan base and encourage even more people to read the trilogy πŸ™‚ you need to keep us updated this is too awesome!

  22. Steven S. says:

To be honest, I’m kinda not digging this. I’ve spent so much time trying to visualize the world of Midcyru in my own eyes, it would be just weird to see it presented from a different(albeit the correct) perspective.

  23. Matt says:

I really hope this is not done in a western graphic novel style… I’ll still buy it either way though. πŸ™‚

  24. Brandon says:

    how long would it be

  25. JJ says:

means we are one step closer to a movie!!!! love comics so i cant wait for this

  26. D Man says:

I am a huge fan of these books. And I can not wait to see exactly what the author had in mind for the characters, and how the match up with what I had envisioned reading through the series

  27. Bryce says:

I will definitely buy this. I hope they do one for each novel, though. A “Perfect Shadow” one would be cool, too.

  28. Wyatt says:

Im just glad that i have something to compare what i imagined to what brent had imagined.

  29. Paul says:

This sounds INCREDIBLE. Me and my friend have agreed for years that the Night Angel would work really well in a manga Style. So i’m pretty much extatic about this!

  30. Tim S. says:

I’m a big fan of the night angle series, I’ve read them several time. I also like graphic novels and manga, so this is pretty cool in my book. I just hope they do a good job with the art work in it.

  31. Orthus says:

Holy- That is amazing news! I’m so excited, I’ve wanted a graphic novel of The Night Angel trilogy since I picked up the first book. I reread the trilogy every now and again, I really enjoy it and can’t wait to see more. I don’t normally go for graphic novels, but I’d definitely go for this one. Like someone said earlier, that much closer to a movie!

  32. Tianna says:

this just made my day. I CAN’T WAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON A COPY!!

  33. Jinn says:

Love love love, times a million this Night Angel trilogy. Have gotten a ton of my friends to get into it, and they are never disappointed. I likened it, and I apologize if you don’t like my comparison to the story of Aladdin becoming a ninja with magic, living in a world akin to LOTR and King Arthur, but written kinda like a Tarantino movie.

Cant wait to see the Graphic novel. I know I’ll be recommending it at my store. And if you ever do book signings, you should come to Brentwood, Ca., the Norcal one. Just saiyan.

  34. bid0 says:

    I cannot wait.

  35. Corr says:

As a fan of comics/manga/graphic novels and the Night Angel series, this just made my day! Can’t wait!

  36. mike says:

way of the shadow graphic novel was great, will there be ones for the 2nd and 3rd books aswell?

    1. brent says:

No plans for 2 or 3 right now, sadly! On the plus side, that means more other books, faster! πŸ™‚
